Farming
Approximately 70–80 % of Ugandans’ food is produced by farmers. Nevertheless, they make up 78% of Uganda’s poorest citizens. One of the most challenging professions in the country is farming. However, we are now making unceasing efforts to provide these crucial workers with the assistance they require to succeed.
Empowering Farmers for a Sustainable Future: ACRAM Foundation's Farming Project
At ACRAM Foundation, we're passionate about supporting Uganda's smallholder farmers and agro-pastoralists to become more productive, resilient, and prosperous. That's why we've launched a breakthrough project that is transforming the agricultural landscape across the country - from crop production to livestock rearing.
Our project aims to help rural communities increase the quality and quantity of what they produce, while also building their links to lucrative markets. We help farmers gain access to the finance and high-quality agricultural inputs such as improved seeds, fertilizer, irrigation, and animal feed, needed to consolidate agricultural productivity.
- Market-Driven Production: We're empowering farmers to use market information to produce food that is in high demand.
- Climate-Smart Farming: Our projects are helping farmers to adapt their practices to climate extremes such as drought and flooding.
- Learning by Doing: We help farmers' groups learn about best agricultural practices by providing opportunities for handson experience.
- Boost Productivity: Through innovative techniques such as good animal husbandry and high-quality agricultural inputs, we're increasing the volumes of crops produced per hectare and the productivity of livestock.
- Reducing Food Loss: We're developing innovative ways to store produce in waterproof sacks in moisture-controlled warehouses, preserve produce like chilies using solar dryers, and build links to markets. All resulting in lower post-harvest losses, higher incomes, and a lower carbon footprint.
- Marketing and Aggregation: At ACRAM Foundation, we understand that farmers need buyers to thrive. We've developed ingenious ways to aggregate crops and sell them in bulk, or add value by processing and packaging them, such as producing oil from sunflower seeds or making butter from milk, resulting in higher prices and secure revenue streams.
